CHAPTER THIRTEEN: ANNIE

“Eek! Gimme, gimme, gimme!” Sammy rushed the girls as they came through the front door of the apartment. She wrenched a Carter’s bag out of Teddy’s hands and opened it, tossing a receipt on the floor before pulling out a tiny gray romper. She held it up to Annie’s still-flat belly, ooh-ing as her eyes went wide. “Oh my God. These things are so cute they should be illegal.”

“Just wait until you see the little white onesie for church.” Teddy grinned as she set the rest of her bags on Annie’s couch. “Gender neutral, but absolutely adorable.”

Sammy clutched the romper to her chest as she plopped down in an armchair. “When do you find out the gender again? I spied a University of Georgia dress at Dillard’s the other day, and it is taking all of my self-control not to put it on layaway.”

Annie snorted and took her own seat on the couch. “Not for a while. Something like eighteen or twenty weeks, I think.”

She sank into the soft folds of the couch, enjoying the way its timeworn pillows cradled her lower back. Annie still might not be showing, but her body was feeling the full effects of pregnancy. As the morning sickness started to ease, the weird aches and pains were ramping up.

“Please, please, please schedule your next shopping date when I don’t have a class,” Sammy said. “I really want to tag along.”

“Well, we wouldn’t have gone tonight if it wasn’t a special occasion.” Teddy crossed her legs as she sized up Annie and raised an eyebrow in her direction. “Someone has been in desperate need of a distraction.”

Annie shot her friend a look.

“What’s up?” Sammy asked, only half-paying attention as she tore through the remainder of their shopping bags.

“Our Annabeth here has been macking on her baby daddy.”

Sammy dropped the onesie she was holding up. “You did not hook up with Noah again!”

Teddy grinned. “Worse—she kissed him like some kind of chaste, lovesick pup. I think she’s fully in love.”

“I am not in love!” Annie insisted. “Annie Slade does not do love.”

But then her mind went back to the dark nursery. She could still smell Noah’s soft cologne, mixed with the strange, heady scent of fresh paint. She could still feel his forearms clasped between her fingers, strong and pronounced. Flexing as they pulled her closer, as they urged her body to touch his.

“At least, I don’t think I do love,” she squeaked out.

Sammy and Teddy both threw up their arms, faces lighting up with glee.

“SHUT UP!” Teddy clapped her hands. “She finally caves!”

Sammy’s mouth was still gaping open, but her brow had furrowed the smallest bit. As Teddy continued to celebrate, Annie locked eyes with her roommate.

“Really?” Sammy pressed. “I’m so freaking excited for you it’s not even funny, but…really?”

Annie slunk down in her seat. “Yes? No? I don’t know.” She slapped her hands over her eyes. “I don’t want to care about him. I want to keep our relationship clean and simple, stick to the rules we put in place.
